Ryan, E., P., Toto, and A. Gargiulo. Aging in Human Attached Gingival Epithelium.
J. Dent. Res., 53; 74; 1974.
Study Aim
To report the mitotic index and cell density of human ral epithelium that includes basal
ans suprabasal generative cells.
Materials and Methods
- 16 men ages 18-22
- 17 men ages 58-64
- Sampled attached and marginal gingiva from clinical healthy Maxillary or mandibular premolars
- Stained and examined histologically
Results
- The total number of epithelial cells in the startum germinativum and number of mitotic figures, in the young men were less than the the older men but were not statistically significantly different
- The mean epithelial density in the young was 144.2 and in the old 191.24- statistically significant
- The lamina propria's means connective tissue cell density was also significantly different being 23.21 in the young and 16.58 in the old
Authors comment: The increase in mitotic activity is a compensatory mechamism to maintain a higher population of smaller cells.
