Kindlova, M., L. Mrklas, Z. Broukal, and L.V. Povysilova. The influence of plaque microbes spectrum on the development and healing of
periodontal lesions in rats. J. Perio. Res., 20: 621.
Study Aim
To compare the healing of an experimentally induced perio lesion in young and old wistor rats
Materials and Methods
Groups:
- 10 rats-Experimental periodontal lesion in young (LHY)
- 10 rats- Experimental lesion in old (LHO)
- Non-treated controls young and old (CY and CO)
Silk induced lesions on mandibular first molars for 3 weeks
After 3 weeks ligatures were removed and allowed to heal for 6 weeks
The rats were sacrificed and examined
Results
- LHY had a more apical position of gingival margin, bottom of the sulcus, junctional epithelium and alveolar crest versus the CY group
- LHO- same level as CO
- CO had a more apical position of ginival margin, bottom of the sulcus but not alveolar crest
- CO had lower plaque scores than CY group
- LHO and CO had an increase in terms of groups of bacteria which was not seen in LHY and CY
- Density of granulocytes and lymphocytes were lower in the older animals
Comment: these changes are considered as a manifestation of aging
