Study Aim
To study development of experimental gingvitis in young and elderly humans during 21 day period of OH abstention.
Methods
10 young (20-24), 11 elderly (65-78)
- gingival crevice less than 3 mm
- abstain OH for 21 days
- check for GI, PI, exudate, bacterial smears
Results
- Increased plaque formation/ accumulation, inflammation, exudate in elderly
- mean time to develop gingivitis was 15 days in young
- older had slower recovery
- microscopic counts of microorganism were similar
Conclusion
There is an altered response to microorganisms of plaque with age
