Is there an anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve?

The anterior loop of the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle is a well-known anatomical structure described in standard anatomy textbooks. In radiographic measurements the length of the loop has been estimated to be between 3 and 5 mm, and often up to 7 mm. Using unilateral dissection data from 58 patients, the author shows that contrary to previous estimations, there were frequent variations. In 43 patients no looop was found. The loop was only 0.5 mm in 13 cases and, in two eases, 1.0 mm long. [J.Y.K.]
