A comparison of chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, triclosan and C31G mouthrinse products for plaque inhibition

The aim of this study was to screen three mouth rinse products and to position their efficacy between a positive control, chlorhexidine (CHX), and a placebo (saline).Twenty patients were recruited into this randomized study. Each product was to be used as a 60-second, 15-ml rinse twice a day. On day 1 of each study period, patients received a professional prophylaxis to remove all plaque, stains, and calculus. Patients received their allocated mouth rinse and were requested to suspend any other form of OH during the study period. On day 5, subjects were scored for plaque. Plaque index (PI) was recorded from the scored buccal and lingual surfaces. Plaque area also was recorded. Wash-out periods of two and one-half days were allowed between each regimen when subjects returned to normal oral hygiene (OH) methods. The results demonstrated that there is a decreasing order of effectiveness as follows: CHX, CPC, triclosan, C31G, and saline. Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among the five treatments.The CHX rinse was significantly more effective than all the other rinses; the triclosan and CPC rinses were very similar. The C31G rinse was significantly more effective than saline but apparently rather less effective than CPC and triclosan and markedly less effective than CHX.

In conclusion, the findings suggest that this particular triclosan mouth rinse would be unlikely to be any more effective than the many available CPC- containing rinses as far as plaque inhibition is concerned. As far as the C31G, the findings of this study would not support efficacy remotely similar to the CHX. Moreover, the C31G product showed an overall pattern of less plaque inhibitory effects compared to both the CPC and triclosan products. The CPC, triclosan, and C31G rinses provided plaque inhibitory effects midway between the positive and the negative control rinses. [C.C.]
