A comparative study of a surgical method of scaling and root planing using Odontoson M
In this study, the traditional method of periodontic surgery was compared with instrumentation using an ultrasonic device (Odontoson M) with an iodized solution irrigation. Eight patients were selected and treated. Two randomly chosen quadrants underwent surgical treatment, and the other two quadrants were treated by ultrasonic device with iodized solution. Then patients received bimonthly oral hygiene instruction for a year. In conclusion, the comparison of the Odontoson M plus an ionized irrigation solution with the traditional flap surgery resulted in a comparable outcome. Although greater pocket reductions were achieved with surgical treatment of 7 mm pockets, the data was not statistically significant. [F.M.]
