Crevicular interleukin-1 beta in moderate and severe periodontitis patients and the effect of phase I treatment

The purposes of the present study were to determine the amount of interleukin-1 beta at sites with moderate or severe periodontitis disease, and to determine the short-term changes in crevicular interleukin-1 beta and gingival index and probing depth after periodontal therapy in periodontal patients. Interleukin-1 beta is a potent stimulator of bone resorption, and it has been implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontal destruction.

One-hundred and thirty gingival crevicular fluid samples were examined from noninflamed (15) and diseased (115) sites in 11 patients with periodontitis. The gingival index and probing depth of each site were recorded at baseline and one month after treatment. A positive correlation was found between the amounts of interleukin-1 beta and gingival index or probing depth. The effect of phase I therapy showed a reduction of both gingival index and the level of interleukin-1 beta one month after therapy. Similarly, there was a reduction of probing depth which was also statistically significant.

These results suggest that the amount of interleukin-1 beta is closely associated with the periodontal status. [M.O.]
