Ex vivo studies of polymorphonuclear neutrophils from patients with early-onset periodontitis

This study was undertaken to investigate if neutrophils in patients with early-onset periodontitis have defective polymorphonuclear cells with regard to their oxidative reactions. The means for measuring oxidative reactions comes from the natural production of light during oxidative reactions and is termed the chemiluminescence response. This study showed that there is no change in oxidation reactions between peripheral blood neutrophils from healthy patients and patients with early-onset periodontitis, and thus the disease etiology does not stem from defects from neutrophils in this regard.
