The effect of porcelain laminate veneers on gingival health and bacterial plaque characteristics

The aim of the present study was to analyze the response of the gingival tissues to the placement of porcelain laminate veneers on anterior teeth and to assess the vitality of plaque bacteria that are retained. Nine patients, seven female and two male, with a mean age of 30 years, participated in the study. Thirty-five veneers were placed on anterior teeth. Oral hygiene instructions were given. The following criteria were measured: volume GCF, level of neutral proteolytic enzyme activity in GCF, GI, plaque bacteria vitality, and statistical analysis.

Results showed that the volume of GCF increased. No significant differences were found in proteolytic enzyme activity or GI. There were significant reductions in PII and plaque bacteria vitality. The authors conclude that further research is needed to assess the long-term effect of porcelain laminate veneers on gingival teeth. [M.O.]
