Candidates and requirements for single tooth implant prostheses
This paper outlines the biologic, prosthetic, and esthetic rationale for using an osseointegrated implant rather than a traditional fixed prostheses. The biologic rationale includes (1) preservation of the enamel and dentin of adjacent teeth, (2) avoidance of pulpal insult with tooth preparation, and (3) minimization of periodontal problems by placement of subgingival margins.
From a prosthetic standpoint, an easily retrievable single tooth implant is desirable. With osseointegrated implants and a retrievable prosthesis, repair of a fractured veneer can easily be accomplished. In addition to achieving all the biological objectives for functional stability, the single-tooth-implant prostheses also must provide an esthetic replacement. [E.L.H.]
