This photograph illustrates the skin lesions in a patient with PV. Note bullae scattered over the skin surface. After a few hours, rarely a day, these bullae rupture, leaving an ulcerated, raw surface.

| Crust formation on the skin takes place in an attempt at healing. This photo from another patient with PV shows bullae and as well as crust formation. If slight pressure is applied to the periphery of any of the bullae or vesicles, the serum contained inside of them will be displaced under the neighboring skin. This phenomenon indicates that the alteration of the intercellular junctions is present in both abnormal and apparently clinically normal skin. | ![]() |
