Other Locations of Bacterial Infections

Other intraoral sites can be affected by different bacterial infections. The illustrations shown here, from the same patient, demonstrate marked palatal and sublingual erythema as a consequence to streptococcal infection. This patient was a 24 years old male HIV+, additionally he had angular cheilitis.

Non-gingivo periodontal bacterial infections are treated in a similar manner to either necrotizing stomatitis or necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis.

Systemic Treatment

If the patient is allergic to penicillin, then prescribe:

The patient should be reevaluated after one week of treatment and the medication should be reinstated if the response is not satisfactory. Recalls every four weeks are recommended until total stabilization, then control check-ups every three to four months.

Local Treatment

The patient should be warned that Chlorexidine gluconate will stain the teeth and also the tongue.
