AIM
The present study was undertaken to evaluate biometrically whether or not coronally repositioned flaps are satisfactory in covering localized gingival recessions.
METHODS
23 persons with 28 teeth having localized gingival recession. 19 to 68 years old. Areas were randomly selected to either lateral sliding or coronally repositioned flaps. Clinically measurements were at 0, 1, 3, and 6 months. Measurements always were taken at the midline of the facial aspect of the tooth. A Marquis M-1 periodontal probe, calibrated in the four color coded segments. 14 patients had the Coronally repositioned flap. First step free gingival graft. Graft was 1/3 wider than the width of the attached gingiva of adjacent teeth. The second step was performed 1 month after the free gingival graft. Second step coronally repositioned flap. Full thickness flap raised.
RESULTS
A mean reduction in the recession of 2.73 mm was obtained after 6 months., which was equivalent to a 64 % decrease of the original recession. A significant increase in the width of the keratinized gingiva, averaging 3.27 mm was found after 6 months. All results remained stable after 30 days post-op.
The procedure with the free gingival graft provides a satisfactory solution in the treatment of localized gingival recessions. The procedure will not produce any changes on the gingiva of the teeth neighboring the recession. Stable results after 1 month.
