Indications - Comestic. Covering the exposed root surface with gingiva also helps to reduce or eliminate the problem of hypersensitivity. The procedure is indicated where there has been recession of the labial or lingual gingiva but when destruction of the interdental papillae on either side of the denuded area either has not occurred or is minimal. The dental alveolar process is much less susceptible to permanent damage after surgical exposure than either the labial or the lingual plates of bone. This procedure uses interdental tissue rather than the buccal and lingual tissue.

Technique - The surface of one papilla is beveled and the other is reversed beveled. The preparation of the donor site calls for a partial thickness graft with vertical incisions at the line angle of the adjacent teeth. Horizontal incisions at the tip of the interdental papilla. The flaps are positioned passively and accurately at the recipient site.

The double papillae procedure has been shown to be predictable when rebuilding the periodontal unit. It does not endanger the adjacent periodontium.
