Patients with polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) disorders such as cyclic neutropenia, agranulocytosis and Chadiak-Higashi disease show unusual severe bone loss around teeth.
9 Patients with JP as defined by Kaslik (1971) were examined for PNML's and monocytes. Chemotaxis was assayed with the modified Boyden chamber technique described by Snyderman (1972). Phagocytosis was measured by the technique described by van Oss and Stinson (1970).
The peripheral blood PMNL numbers were not different from those of a panel of normal subjects. Leukocyte differential count were also within normal range. When tested with E. coli culture filtrate factors the PMNL chemotactic response of JP patients was significantly less the normal patients. The chemotactic response of peripheral blood monocytes of JP patients did not differ from normal patients. The migration against non-chemotactic saline control was normal in PMN and monocytes. The phagocytosis of opsonised Staphylococcus aureus by PMNL was depressed in all JP patients.
