Newman, MG. Periodontosis. Perio Abst, 24:5, 1976

Historical development of periodontosis as disease entity separate from adult periodontitis. Initially thought to be a non inflammatory degenerative disease. Note that previous studies were done on cadavers and the findings were probably due to post-mortem changes of specimens. In 1966 World Workshop in Periodontics reported this concept of "degenerative disease" to be unsubstantiated. The confusing results in term of geographic distribution and evidence of the disease according with sex and race may be due to the difficulty in diagnosis and lack of uniformity in reporting the disease.

Two accepted forms of the disease:

  1. Classic or localized.
  2. Generalized form.

Presumed etiology, genetics, diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment.
