Philstrom BL, Thorn HL, Folke LE. The effect of periodontal
dressing on supragingival microorganisms. J Perio, 48:440,1977.
This study evaluates the effect of periodontal dressing alone and in combination with sub-gingival curettage on the growth of viable supragingival microorganisms
Materials and Methods
- 5 Patients 26-48 years old
- 3 separate phases: supragingival plaque material collection from the gingival 1/3 of the tooth
- Control =anstention from OH without application of perio dressing
- Application of zinc eugenol dressing
- Sub-gingival curettage was performed. followed by application of perio dressing.
- Supragingival plaque samples were collected after each of 2 consecutive 7-day intervals during each phase.
- Aerobic and anaerobic incubation were used. Gram Stains
-
Results
- Application of the selected periodontal dressing did not affect the wet weight of plaque-like material when compared to the same surfaces without dressing.
- No difference in weight of material was found following subgingival curettage combined with dressing as compared to the use of dressing without curettage.
- Number of total microorganisms decreased significantly after curettage + dressing compared to the same site before surgery + dressing.
- No consistent inhibitory effect upon the growth of total viable organisms was found by application of periodontal dressing.
