Purpose
Determination of differences between undressed or dressed wound after reverse bevel flap procedures.
Materials and Methods
- 24 patients
- Similar bilateral pockets an Rx defects.
- At 0, and 7,14,21,28 days after surgeries
- Ging Fluid, G Ind. Pocket Depth
- Split Mouth design
- Interdental sutures and digital pressure.
- Dressing material used : CoePak
- Dressed sied randomly chosen before surgery
- Antibiotics prescribed : Penicillin
- 7 days dressing was removed and replaced for another week
- At 7 and 14 days patients were asked to assess any pain, sensitivity, swelling eating difficulties.
- At 28 days patients were asked whether they preferred the dressing or not.
Results
- Gingival Fluid: No differences between the 2 sides
- Gingival Index: At 7 days the undressed side had a Lower GI but at 14,21,18 the situation was reversed.
- Patient experience:
- At 7 days the undressed part showed more bleeding and sensitivity. At 14 patients most patients were free of symptoms except from sensitivity which tended to persevere on the undressed side.
- At 28 days it was found that 45% of patients preferred no dressing, 37.5% had no preference and 16.6% preferred dressing.
Discussion
Patients should have been questioned not only at 28 days about preference but at each interval of time.
