Addy M, Douglas WH,: A chlorhexidine-containing methacrilic gel as
a periodontal dressing. J Periodontol, 46:465,1975.
Report the ability of a methacrylate gel to carry and release chlorhexidine acetate.
Materials and Methods
- Gel with Chlorxedine incorporated from 0.25% to 8%
- Oxford Staph. was inoculated to cultures for 24h at 37 C in the presence or not of CHX
- Measurement of zone of inhibition
- The 2% CHX was compared to Coe Pak against a range of organisms
- The 2% CHX was also placed in 10 patients. receiving GV. At seven days dressing was removed and then inoculated with Oxford Staph.
Results
- Dressing containing 0.25-0.5% CHX had antibacterial activity up to 6-17 days.
- The ones wit more than 0.5% inhibited bacterial growth for more than 24 days.
- The CHX free gel and Coe-Pak had limited antibacterial activity.
- The dressing containing CHX removed 1 week after surgeries had antibacterial activity
