Review article

Rationale for use (in the past and at present time)

Protection, splinting of loose teeth, desensitize teeth, patient comfort. Chemical curettage of ANUG cases. Stabilization of apically repositioned flaps, control of bleeding, decrease discomfort, splinting. At present time there is not any more agreement about that dressing should control bleeding.

Physical properties

Eugenol more iirritany for tissue than without.

Coe Pak consist of 2 pastes; 1 containing a zinc oxide , an oil a gum, and a fungicide (lorothidol). The other consists of fatty acids, a colophony resin and a bacteriostatic agent. (chlorothymol).

Retention

No device has been demonstrated to increase retention.

Wound healing

Eugenol dressings more irritant. Eugenol dressings set hard with sharp edges Effect on cell culture: Similar with or without eugenol

Cyanoacrylate is able to cement moist. Immediate hemostasis. Can be used without suturing ; sealing of wound from bacterial invasion. Biodegradable

Therapeutic effects

Incorporation of antibiotics , chlorhexidine, zinc oxide seems to have some antibacterial effect.

Allergies

Resin and eugenol : possible sensitization. Antibiotics incorporated also can produce sensitization. Histologically, it was demonstrated that healing with or without dressing is not different after gingivectomy. Dressing reduces sensitivity. Dressing should be removed after 7 days to prevent plaque accumulation.
