DELIVERY BY IRRIGATION

Linden, GJ., and Newman, HJ: The effects of subgingival irrigation with low dosage metronidazole on periodontal inflammation. J Clin Perio, 18(3):177-181, 1991.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a method of simplified oral hygiene which utilizes twice daily tooth brushing and no interdental cleaning by the patient, but does utilize a 0.5% metronidazole subgingival irrigation regime.

Materials and methods:

Patients in this study were scaled at day 0 and given the same home care instructions. The irrigation test group, 0.5% metronidazole, and the control group, .9% saline, were to be irrigated at home by the patients with the use of a syringe and a blunted irrigation tip which was introduced on the buccal side of defective sites of all 19 patients in this study.

Results:

Results of this 28 day study showed marked improvement in both groups which says a lot about irrigation but nothing about the chemotherapeutic effects of metronidazole which the authors point out might be in part explained by a too low percentage of metronidazole.
