ANTIMICROBIALS: FIBER DELIVERY
Rapley, JW., Cobb, CM., Killoy, WJ., and Williams DR.: Serum levels
of tetracycline during treatment with tetracycline containing fibers.
J Perio 63(10):817-820, 1992.
Purpose:
To measure plasma tetracycline (TCN) concentration after placement of multiple TCN fibers.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 4 volunteers with pockets 5-10 mm probing depth (PD) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were included in this study. PD, BOP, and plasma samples were taken at; baseline, 1 hour after placement, 3 hours, 3 days, 10 days, and before removal.
Results:
There was a loss of the fiber in 3/4 of the patients between 4th and 10th day. No serum level was greater 0.1 ug/l. The TCN was present 3 hours in 3/4 patients, and 3 days after placement 1/4 patients.
Conclusion:
Minimum inhibitory TCN concentrations can be reached and maintained in the pocket. There were no systemic effects. TCN fibers are site specific, adsorbed by cementum, and well tolerated without serious side effects.
