ANTIMICROBIALS: TOPICAL

Arch Jones et al : Clinical and Microbiological Effects of Controlled-Release Locally Delivered Minocycline in Periodontics. J Perio, 65:0158-1066, 1994.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and microbial effects following the use of minocycline in a biodegradable controlled-release system.

Materials and methods:

A total of 51 patient with > 7 mm pockets and presence of P. gingivalis. P. intermedia, or A. a. were included in the study. This patients were allocated to 4 treatment groups; scaling and root planing (SRP), minocycline (M+SRP), minocycline only (M), and no treatment. Only one quadrant was treated. At 0,1,3 and 6 months following therapy, plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), and attachment levels were recorded. Also DNA probe analysis was performed.

Clinical results:

There was a decrease in probing depth; the greatest in the M+SRP at one month. This reduction was greater than no treatment and SRP at 3 months. There was no difference between groups at 6 months.
