ANTIMICROBIALS: TOPICAL

Ellen V. G. Frandsen et al: Effect of Local Metronidazole Application on Periodontal Healing Following Guided Tissue Regeneration: Microbial Findings. J Perio, 65:921-928, 1994.

Purpose:

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of local application of metronidazole gel on the microflora in the wound following application of e-PTFE membrane.

Methods and materials:

A total of 12 subjects 20-60 years old, with pockets at least > 6 mm depth were included in this study. The teeth were randomly assigned to control or test. Chlorhexidine rinse (CHX) was used throughout all implantation period of the membrane. Membranes were removed at 6 weeks. Microbiological examination was performed.

Results:

Results showed that 30 weeks after removal of the membrane there was a mean gain of clinical attachment level of 92% for test sites and 50% for control.

The median number of cultivable bacteria decreased at 1 week for the test group whereas an increase was observed for control.

2 weeks after membrane insertion no microbiological differences were found between test and control.

Despite the good clinical results in the test group, all membranes were heavily colonized with bacteria at time of removals
