ANTIMICROBIALS: TOPICAL

Lone Sander et al: Effect of Local Metronidazole Application on Periodontal Healing Following Guided Tissue Regeneration: Clinical Findings. J Perio, 65:914-920, 1994.

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of healing after guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in association with local application of metronidazole gel.

Materials and methods:

A total of 12 patients with paired of vertical periodontal defects were included in this study. These patients were assigned to one of two treatments; GTR with ePTFE membrane and metronidazole gel, or GTR only.

Results:

The median gain in probing attachment level as a percentage of initial defect depth was 92% for test and 50% for controls. No significant difference in sites regarding plaque, bleeding on probing, reduction in pocket depth, gain in bone height, or recession of gingival margin.
