ANTIMICROBIALS: TOPICAL

Pedrazzoli, V., Kilian, M., Karring, T.: Comparative clinical and microbiological effects of topical subgingival application of metronidazole 25% gel and scaling in the treatment of adult periodontitis. J Clin Perio, 19(9 p2):715-722, 1992.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to compare clinical microbiological effects of topical metronidazole gel and a single session of subgingival scaling in the treatment of adult periodontitis for a long term evaluation.

Materials and methods:

This randomized controlled clinical study involved 24 subjects with periodontal disease. Patients received the 2 treatments simultaneously in 2 randomly selected quadrants of the dentition. The metronidazole gel was applied on days 0 and 7. Scaling was carried out in one quadrant on day 0 and in one quadrant on day 7. Clinical and microbiological examination were performed before treatment and on days 21, 49, 91, 133 and 175.

Results:

Results indicated that both treatments were effective in decreasing probing depth and bleeding on probing.

Conclusion:

Metronidazole tended to be a little better than scaling and root planing and its clinical effects lasted 6 months.
