ANTIMICROBIALS: TOPICAL

Kaslick,, R., Tuckman, M., and Chasens, A.: Effect of topical vancomycin on plaque and chronic gingival inflammation. J Perio, 44:366, 1973.

Purpose:

Effect of a Vancomycin preparation on bacterial plaque deposits and chronic gingival inflammation when compared to a control preparation.

Materials and methods:

A total of 99 dental students were included in this study. Baseline plaque deposited and gingival status was determined by plaque index and gingival index. Each subject was given the test or the control ointment to apply 4 times daily buccal and lingual for six days. Then, plaque deposits and gingival status were assessed again.

Results:

The gingivitis scores of the Vancomycin and control groups did not differ significantly. The plaque scores differ significantly. There were no evidence of allergic reactions.

Conclusions:

Vancomycin reduced plaque scores to a significantly degree. Chronic gingivitis scores were not reduced significantly.
