ANTIMICROBIALS: RINSES

Denis M. OíMullane et al: A 12-Month Study of the Efficacy of a Pre-Brushing Rinse in Plaque Removal. J Perio, 65:611-615, 1994.

Purpose:

To compare the effectiveness of PBR with that of water when used as a pre-brushing rinse in reducing plaque scores following tooth brushing and to measure the effectiveness of PBR in reducing gingivitis scores over the period of the study.

Materials and Methods:

A total of 617 subjects were included in this study. The patients were divided into 4 groups; rinsed with PBR before brushing (Group 1), rinsed with tap water before brushing (Group 2), brushed only (Group 3), and rinsed with sterile water before brushing (Group 4). Plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) were recorded at baseline. Groups 1, 2, and 4 after rinsing brushed their teeth with standard commercial toothpaste for no more than 40 seconds. The subjects were recalled at 3,6,9,12 months

Results:

The difference between the PBR group and the no rinse group are significant at baseline , 6 months, and 12 months. At 3 months the decrements were greater for the PBR group but this was not statistically significant.

Conclusion:

The authors showed the pre-brushing and post-brushing plaque scores were significantly higher in the PBR group. The criterion of gingival bleeding index showed no difference between the 4 groups hence the significance of the higher plaque removal scores of the PBR remains in doubt.
