rinses on Bacterial Colonization of Tooth Enamel: TEM and SEM studies.

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of SnF2 and NaF mouth rinses (100 ppm F-) on the bacterial adsorption and colonization of enamel in vivo. Using electron microscopy, an attempt was made to explain the variables that affect the suppression of plaque development with these mouth rinses.
Materials and methods:
This was an in vivo study using extracted teeth from one individual where 2 mouth rinsing regimes were used: either twice a day or once a day for seven days with the respective mouth rinses.
Results:
Results showed that the only ineffective regimes was the NaF group with a one time per day rinse and the control group with SnCl2. All other regimes showed non-attached bacteria to the enamel surfaces as well as to other bacteria and a decreased bacterial colonization was noted.
especially in the SnF2 group. In the SnF2 group daily one time use greatly reduced bacterial counts but twice a day rinsing left the examined teeth practically devoid of bacteria. The authors point out the fluoride may reduce the adhesion of plaque to apatite by decreasing the wettability of the enamel.
