ANTIMICROBIALS: RINSES

Mankodi, S., Ross, NM, and Mostler, K.: Clinical Efficacy of Listerine in Inhibiting and Reducing Plaque and Experimental Gingivitis. J Clin Perio 14:285, 1987.

Purpose:

The purpose of this double blind, controlled trial was to evaluate the effect, if any, of increasing the frequency of use of Listerine on supragingival plaque and gingivitis, in the absence of other oral hygiene measures.

Materials and methods:

103 adult subjects were included in this study. The study involved subjects rinsing under supervision either 2 or 4 times daily for 2 weeks with Listerine or with a vehicle control and suspension of all other oral hygiene. Plaque and gingivitis were evaluated at baseline and after 2 weeks.

Results:

Listerine 4 times a day retarded supragingival plaque to 55.8%. Listerine 2 times a day decreased plaque to 44.9%. Listerine 4 times a day inhibited gingivitis 59.1%. Listerine 2 times a day inhibited gingivitis 56.4%.

Conclusion:

Subjects using Listerine 2 or 4 times a day as the only oral hygiene procedure demonstrated highly significant inhibition and reduction of both supragingival plaque and gingival inflammation compared to those using the vehicle control.
