CHLORHEXIDINE

Albandar, J., Gjermo, P., and Preus, H.: Chlorhexidine Use After Two Decades of Over-the-counter Availability. J. Perio 65:109-112, 1994.

Purpose:

To investigate the use of chlorhexidine by dentists in the private practice sector.

Material and methods:

A written questionnaire was sent to dentists in Norway and a total of 354 dentists (78%) responded to it. A telephone interview to 57 dentists was completed.

Results:

14% never recommended CHX in their practice. 85% reported using it routinely after surgical procedures. 74% in treating acute gingivitis. 35% in non-surgical treatment. 53% of dentist it was used in short term plaque control. 23% for fungal infections

Conclusion:

The results indicate that the agent is used frequently and that its use profile in the Norwegian dental practice is diverse.
