While attending the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, Professor Lindemann developed parallel interests in general dentistry and dental education. After a General Practice Residency at Denver General Hospital in 1975, where he treated an underserved, inner-city population, he worked briefly as an associate in general practice until joining the UCLA School of Dentistry faculty as Assistant Professor in 1977. An opportunity to work for the Public Health Service in Lausanne, Switzerland drew him to Europe for two years before returning to UCLA in 1980. His duties were primarily related to access to care for the handicapped and he eventually was appointed Director of Special Patient Care. He actively pursued immunology research related to natural killer cells from the early 1980s to the late 1990s, during which time he was promoted to associate professor in 1989 and professor in 1995. Since 1997, Professor Lindemann has served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Personnel. He teaches part-time, maintains a part-time practice in general dentistry at the Faculty Group Dental Practice and engages in research in dental education.

"I strongly believe and appreciate that Dentistry is a learned profession. The scholarship imparted in dental education serves as the foundation of the profession and I enjoy participating at this fundamental level. At UCLA, I strive to develop in students a life-long desire to problem-solve, to think globally, and to become leaders in the profession."
