Educational and Professional Background

University of Istanbul, Faculty of Dentistry, D.D.S. 1990

UCLA School of Dentistry, Advanced Prosthodontics Postdoctoral Residency Program, Specialty Certificate 1994

UCLA Medical Center, Maxillofacial and Implant Prosthetics Postdoctoral Residency Program, Subspecialty Certificate 1999

UCLA School of Dentistry, Advanced Education in General Dentistry Postdoctoral Residency Program, Certificate 2002

Following his father’s footsteps, Dr. Fanuscu completed his dental training in Istanbul and then started his lifelong learning career throughout Europe and US. He was first granted to do research on Empress All-Ceramic Crown System in the Research and Development Department of Viola/Divalent AG in Liechtenstein. With his marginal fidelity study on Empress crowns, he received the Young Speaker of the Year Award in 1991 from the International Society of Dental Ceramics in New Orleans, LA. He briefly joined the Faculty of Dentistry in University of Istanbul and later graduated from the UCLA residency program to become a prosthodontist. After four years of private practice in Istanbul, Dr. Fanuscu completed his subspecialty training in Maxillofacial and Implant Prosthetics at UCLA. He then joined the UCLA School of Dentistry as a faculty member in 1999. Dr. Fanuscu received the Annual Grant Award in 2000 from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Research Foundation. He is involved in pre and postdoctoral teaching, research, residency program administration and private practice. Dr. Fanuscu lectures nationally and internationally on implant dentistry and prosthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

Research/Creative Activities

Dr. Fanuscu’s main research goal is to understand the role of biomechanics in the establishment and maintenance of implant-bone union. He is working to develop a ‘virtual patient’ to model the use of dental implants. Structural, mechanical and biological modeling fidelity is crucial in the outcome. Dr. Fanuscu utilizes various techniques like micro-scanning computer tomography, nano-indentation and 3D finite element analysis in modeling bone architecture and properties for mechanical testing. The simulation will help testing various reconstructive scenarios and making clinical decisions.

Patient Care Activities

Dr. Fanuscu provides comprehensive dental care limited to prosthodontics in the UCLA Faculty Group Dental Practice.
