"When I was asked to join the faculty of UCLA School of Dentistry in 1970, I was in the Commission Corp of the Public Health Service as a dental care consultant helping to establish dental programs within neighborhood health centers and managing short-term training grants for health professionals. Although I found this work rewarding, the opportunity to join the dental faculty opened up opportunities that, at the time, I could not imagine. An academic career enabled me to be involved with innovations in teaching, research and working in a variety of community settings. UCLA is a unique institution. Unlike many dental schools, we are located on the university campus and have the opportunity to interact with faculty and students from many academic disciplines. I have had the privilege of working with economists, sociologists, anthropologists and a variety of experts in public health. These interactions have been extremely rewarding both professionally and personally." |
