Our Mission
is to provide rigorous research training and career development to produce research-focused dentist scientists and oral health researchers.
Six tracks of training programs are offered. Three are tailored for dentist scientists (DSTP, Dentist-PhD and postgraduate training for dentist-scientists) and two are for oral health researchers (PhD and postgraduate training for oral health-scientists). The sixth track are short-term training positions for graduates from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Precollege Dentist Scientist Pipeline Program that are in college and gearing for a career in dentistry and/or oral health research. This T32 training program addresses the central goal to the critical shortage of dental school faculty competitive in the NIH-funding environment. The UCLA Dentist-Scientist and Oral Health-Scientist Training Program builds upon our considerable training experiences, outstanding applicant pool and superb mentoring faculties. Trainees on this program will be competently prepared for independent scientific academic careers in oral health research.
The mission of this comprehensive T32 training program is to prepare trainees from diverse background in novel, mentored research that is relevant to oral health. Specific programmatic emphasis, highly relevant to the missions of NIDCR will be placed on research targeting (1) Bioengineering and Bone Biology, (2) Head and Neck Cancer, and (3) Microbiology and Immunity. To foster our mission we have created a multidisciplinary training program that is interdisciplinary in nature linking trainees to mentorship at the School of Dentistry, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, Stem Cell Institute, Molecular Biology Institute, California NanoSystems Institute, School of Engineering School, School of Medicine, and the School of Public Health. A diverse pool of trainees is being addressed in this program with a focus on the research training and career development of “Research-Focused Dentist-Scientists and Oral Health-Scientists”.
