Budget Information

All dental students are assigned a budget for the cost of education, including registration fees, living expenses, books and supplies, etc. The amount of financial aid you receive cannot exceed the cost of education according to guidelines and regulations established by the federal government and administered through UCLA’s Central Financial Aid Office.

Please note that the budgets do not include items such as consumer (credit card) debts or car loans. We recommend that you reduce these obligations before you enter school as they are not considered budget items under federal regulation and cannot be included in your cost-of-education budget. One major factor that influences a student’s budget is the tuition (http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/fees/dent.htm) which varies depending on whether or not that student is considered a California resident or non-California resident.

Determining Your Residency Status

In order to be considered a California resident, you must prove to the Residence Deputy that you have lived in California for twelve consecutive months prior to starting classes at UCLA. To apply for California state residency, you must obtain a Residence Classification Petition form from the Residence Deputy.

The Residence Deputy requires documentation of your intent and length of residence. Such documentation includes (but is not limited to):

• Copy of your voter registration card
• Copy of your California driver’s license
• Proof of auto registration in California
• Proof of accounts in California banks
• Copy of your lease/rental agreement

For additional information and requirements, please contact the Residence Deputy at UCLA at (310) 825-3447. The School of Dentistry does not make any determination about students’ residency status.
